American Muscle Aching to Be Flexed

There's a reason why the Ford Mustang GT is such a popular car with tuners and weekend racers: it's really good. Its brawny V8 engine with its throaty voice and loads of low-end torque evokes the glory days of the American muscle car, and its tastefully retro styling makes it belong to both that era and this one.

But, of course, a popular car is nothing particularly special, right? Well... that's why we went to the trouble to make it special.

Our Mustang has been custom-built to Roush Stage 3 specifications using Roush parts—except where we used even better components than they recommended, such as Tein race coilover dampers, Wilwood brakes, Sparco racing seats, and a supercharger the size of a dorm fridge (a Whipple unit from Ford Racing) that takes it up to a thumping 550 crank horsepower. Finished off with Roush's Trak Pak wheels and Cooper tires, our Mustang will not only surge away from a stop light faster than any other pony car you're likely to meet, it'll dart around corners like a Grand-Am racer.* It's a big car, with two usable rear seats and a lot of trunk space (big enough for us to fit a 13-inch subwoofer in there...); but it's more nimble and tossable than any car its size has a right to be.

Sure, you could settle for renting a GT-H... or you could rent the PRI Roush Mustang and leave the GT-H drivers coughing on your dust.

*In fact, in our on-track testing we've found that this car, believe it or not, is a match for a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. And the sound it makes is unbelievable.
